Region Developer: Mark Porcelli, Middlesex, New Jersey

Mark Porcelli has been working with cars since he was 10 years old. Mark grew up in Colonia, N.J. and worked a lot of his life in the family-owned truck dealership, so he’s always had experience with vehicles and repairs. The experience caused him to want to own his own business one day. On the road to that, he wound up at a Midas franchise in 1998, successfully running it for six years. When he joined them, he inherited $540,000 in store sales, and when he left, it was $870,000, so during his time there, he saw a 70 percent increase in sales and revenue. Deciding to sell, he then worked for Snap On Tools’ corporate location in 2004 and was responsible for managing franchisees, selling tools to shops and recruiting, as well as mentoring. After three years, Mark moved on and has been with Honest-1 since 2007.

At Mark’s Middlesex location, he is also offering free brakes for much of May, most prominently during the week of April 29. Mark is offering this no-strings-attached service technically through Saturday, May 18, while supplies last. They are literally giving away front and rear brakes, and all customers have to pay for is the labor. On average, this can be $100 to $120 per front or rear pair. (Of course, if it’s an extremely rare vehicle, or there are more repairs needed following an inspection, additional fees may apply.)

How did you learn about the brand?
I heard about them through a letter when I was working at Snap On. They were looking for shops with an interest in selling and converting.

Why did you choose an opportunity with Honest-1?
Their core values are what I’m all about. I believe in integrity, which is what the brand is predominantly about. In 2006, I bought the master territory and opened a shop a year later while I still worked a day job.

Are you involved with any charities or do any community outreach with your business?
I have been a member of the local Elks Chapter for the past three to four years and have done a fundraiser for them in the past. I also continue to support local school organizations. Through the First Aid Squad members organization, on June 15, they are having a family fun emergency services day and will be selling good neighbor cards, which include two free oil changes, and two other coupons: $20 off front or rear brake service and 10 percent off anything your vehicle needs up to $25.

What challenges have you overcome to get where you are now?
The community here knows everyone, so to get through that, it took a bit of time to prove we can fix cars effectively and not take advantage of people. We continue to grow year after year, which touches back on the integrity.

How many employees do you have right now?
I have a shop manager that runs the front counter. I also have three full-time mechanics and myself.

What are your expansion or development plans? What is your end goal with Honest-1?
From a regional developer standpoint, I’m always looking for qualified franchisees that want to provide awesome customer service, in a very difficult industry.

My goal is to get one store open in every county of my territory area. You just do it one store at a time. I’m not looking to buy another for me, but I do want to find other franchisees that fit for other counties.

What are some of the publications you read? Local? National? What is your goal publication with your business?
Our challenge is our media market is technically New York City; my tiny town is a small fish in the big pond. But, there are local outlets such as About Our Town, which already covered us, but we would like to be in the Courier News or News 12 New Jersey.

The Home News Tribune did an article on us in February 2010, and there’s of course the Star-Ledger too.

Do you have any other interesting hobbies or passions?

I like to snowmobile in the winter, motorcycle in the summer and go to the beach with my family.

Franchisee Spotlight: Tom Watson, Prior Lake, MN

Tom Watson grew up In Brooklyn Center, Minn. and has lived in the Metro area his entire life. He has been working for Jim Henkel, the Honest-1 Auto Care Area Developer, since 2010 — when Henkel only had one store in Minnesota. Watson began his Honest-1 career focusing primarily on outside sales and providing back-up support in stores as needed. Over time, through extensive training and education, he assumed the role of Operations Manager of the Minnesota market.

Watson first met Fred Haynes, remote franchisee of Honest-1 Prior Lake, when he accepted the position of general manager at Haynes’s Burnsville, Minn. store. Haynes is based in Chicago and is a remote owner, leaving most responsibilities to Watson, who will continue to manage the day-to-day operations for the Burnsville store while overseeing the new Prior Lake location.

Watson made his debut in the automotive industry as a general service technician changing oil, tires and performing light duty repairs. Eventually, Watson realized that he would be better suited in sales and took up the opportunity when a position became available in the company that he was working for at the time.

How did you learn about Honest-1?
I found Honest-1 through an ad posted online, and after one interview, I knew it was where I wanted to spend my career. The very philosophy of how business is conducted, combined with the unique service offerings, makes Honest-1 stand out far ahead of its competitors.

What do you hope to achieve as the general manager of this store?
As manager I hope to provide 15-20 new jobs to the Prior Lake area, set a new standard in customer service and earn a fair profit to generate humble growth for the company.

Do you have any plans to broaden your managerial responsibilities?
My goal is help to educate and inspire teams of automotive professionals all over the Twin Cities and eventually own my own Honest-1 Auto Care stores.

Are you involved in any charities or community groups?

I am active in the Girl Scout Troop that my seven-year-old daughter belongs to.

Region Developer: Miguel Cruz, Northern Virginia

Miguel Cruz, 58, was born and raised in Puerto Rico, but moved to the U.S. at the age of 18 to join the U.S. Army as an electronic technician. He served in the Army for almost 16 years before leaving to join the Civil Service in 1994, where he performed various duties including equipment management and managing contracts for automotive maintenance.  After Cruz retires from the Civil Service in January 2014 to focus on Honest-1 as the Region Developer for Northern Virginia, he will have worked for the government for close to 33 years.

How did you learn about the brand?
In preparing for my retirement from the government, I started looking into businesses. I was going to go on my own but began looking at franchises and came across Honest-1. What appealed to me about them was their business model, which is one that I had envisioned doing had I opened my own business. It was family-friendly and honest.

Why did you decide to take up an opportunity with Honest-1?
After nearly 33 years working for the government, I thought it was time to retire and chase my dream of being a business owner. I grew up in the restaurant business and I always liked business. The automotive field appealed to me because I like working on cars. I haven’t been through formal training in automotive maintenance but I grew up repairing and working on my own cars.

Why did you decide to take on the role of Area Developer?
It was a no brainer for me to become area developer – I hope to have multiple stores and go beyond just being a franchisee.  Also, it’s basically a sales position and I’ve been in sales before. I don’t have experience as an area developer but I didn’t feel like I needed it with the training that Honest-1 provided.

What challenges have you overcome to get where you are now?
The main challenge we have faced in Northern Virginia is the availability of properties in the right area. Zoning for automotive businesses is a real hurdle to overcome because it takes time, which is why it’s important that I open my own store and have something to show future franchisee prospects. One thing that I take into consideration is the convenience of a customer driving to the facility: how far do they have to drive, is there much traffic to get to the location. I try to look for convenience so I’m limiting myself to the areas that I can set the stores in. We’ve worked hard to overcome that challenge and now we have landlords calling us to offer us sites in the right locations.

What are your expansion or development plans? What is your end goal with Honest-1?
There is a location in Alexandria that opened in 2012 before I became area developer and we are currently working on the lease for a franchisee in our Ashburn location, which we plan to open in June 2014. We have at least six sites that are available to us should we decide to move forward. Now it’s a matter of finding candidates to put on these sites. If I don’t find applicants I’m going to open them myself and turn them over to future franchisees. I plan to open around 30 stores in the Northern Virginia area within the next eight to 10 years.

Why did you decide to join the military?
When I was growing up, I always liked watching TV, in particular a program called Combat!, and for some reason, that type of life had always caught my attention. I thought it was a good opportunity to get out of the island and see other parts of the world and serve my country. So when I was almost 19, during the Vietnam era, I joined the military. I didn’t think twice about it. I learned a lot and it opened my eyes to a different world and different people.

Before I joined the military, I was a shy guy. Once I joined the military, I started moving up the ranks and inherited more responsibilities and it put me in a position where I had to stand in front of people training and teaching them. The military gave me confidence and I lost all my inhibitions when it came to standing in front of people.

Why did you decide to join the Civil Service?

After I decided to leave the U.S. Army, the job market was tough in the civilian sector. I had just finished 16 years working for the government so it didn’t make sense to throw that away, so I decided to pursue a career with Civil Service and combine my military time to total 33 years with the government.

Honest-1 Auto Care featured in the Dallas Business Journal

Honest-1 Auto Care was recently featured in the Dallas Business Journal in an article titled, "Honest-1 Auto Care Plans 10-15 Shops in DFW." The article was built from an interview with Jon Langbert, region developer for Honest-1 in North Texas, who is actively scouting out real estate and looking for franchisees in the market to help grow the franchise. Honest-1 is an environmentally friendly car care shop that provides a clean, upscale waiting room, internet cafe and a child's play area. In the next two to three years, Honest-1 is looking to add an additional 10-15 shops in the area.

Honest-1 Auto Care plans 15 to 20 shops in DFW

Honest-1 Auto Care plans 15 to 20 locations in North Texas in the next two or three years.

Staff Writer- Dallas Business Journal

A new upscale automobile repair shop plans to launch 15 to 20 new locations in Dallas-Fort Worth in the next two or three years.

Phoenix-based Honest-1 Auto Care bills itself as an environmentally friendly shop with a clean, upscale waiting room, an internet cafĂ© and children’s play area.

Jon Langbert, regional developer for Honest-1, secured his first franchise owner, who is looking for an existing building that could be remodeled.

He estimates it will take about six months to open the first shop once a location is identified.

Langbert, a Dallas native who lives in Addison, paid $150,000 for the Dallas, Denton, Collin and Tarrant County region in July. He will find the franchises, identify locations and work with lenders to secure financing.
He’ll earn 3 percent of revenue from the franchise owner while the other 3 percent will go toward Honest-1.
The first franchises will likely be remodeled from existing auto repair shops but the long-term goal is to build new locations from the ground up, Langbert said. The shops will be between 3,500 to 5,000 square feet.

"Dallas is such a car-oriented market that we’ll be leaning toward the larger end of that scale with eight to 10 bays," he said.

The company is looking for franchise owners with management experience, not necessarily with automobile expertise.

Honest-1 is 100 percent ESA (Environmentally Sustainable Actions) certified by recycling, preventing pollution, conserving resources and offering eco-friendly auto services.

Regional Developer Spotlight: Jon Langbert, North Texas

As of July, Jon Langbert, 48, has become the Region Developer for Honest-1 Auto Care in North Texas. Langbert grew up in Dallas and went to the University of Texas in Austin, where he received his BBA in finance and later received his MBA from Harvard. Langbert has always had the entrepreneurial bug and in 1995 he started his own video poker business.

Franchising has always been something that peaked Langbert’s interests. He bought a Commission Express franchise and became one of their most expansive franchisees ultimately owning seven locations. Commission Express is a small specialty financing franchise that covered the United States with 70 locations. In 2010, Langbert sold all of his units individually and explained, “I had more fun buying and selling the franchises, than I did running them. That’s how I decided to become a developer.”

“I am environmentally conscious and I wanted to be part of a brand that was in tune with my values. I met the folks at Honest-1 and saw that it was an upscale franchise. I liked the fact that they were taking a product that everyone buys and making it better,” said Langbert. “Honest-1 is doing the same thing that Starbucks did for coffee. Before, you had to go to the corner bodega or Dunkin’ Donuts. But, they turned it into an upscale cultural phenomenon. I believe that Honest-1 can do the same thing for auto repair.”

How did you learn about the brand?
I looked at a few different franchise options, but knew I wanted to be a developer which narrowed my focus. I also wanted to go into a business that was early on in its growth curve so I could help reach its potential. I started by talking to other regional developers and since there are no Honest-1’s in Texas, I made arrangements to visit a fellow developer, Steve Grimes, when I went to my brother’s wedding in Seattle. I visited four of the stores with Steve and I began to understand the way they operated within the auto care industry.

Do you have any other interesting hobbies or passions?

I am a private pilot, but only have about 200 flying hours so far. I play ice hockey as does my daughter and I also have triplets that take up a lot of my time. They are going into middle school, two girls and a boy. My family is my real passion.

Franchisee Spotlight: Butch Carter, Marietta, Georgia

Butch grew up in Belmont North Carolina, a small town outside Charlotte.  After high school, Butch went to college at NC State on an Air Force ROTC scholarship.  However, he returned home after one of his parents passed away and graduated from UNC Charlotte.  Upon graduation, Butch went into the Air Force and spent 4 years as an intelligence officer stationed in Denver and then Shreveport, Louisiana.  As part of his Strategic Air Command duties, he would keep a 3-star general and his staff informed of the current events taking place in the world.  He was also involved in Operation Just Cause in 1989 where U.S. forces invaded Panama.

After leaving the Air Force and earning his MBA with a finance concentration from Louisiana Tech University, Butch entered the pharmaceutical industry with Pfizer as a pharmaceutical sales rep.  He then worked for the Japanese company, Otsuka, then Quintiles until landing at Axcan where he worked for 12 years as a regional manager and then a zone director of sales with responsibility for half of the US and Canada.  He was the top sales manager at Axcan three years in a row and won multiple sales awards during his tenure, but when Axcan went through an acquisition and changed their name to Aptalis, Butch declined to interview for a new position that would require a move to the northeast, and about a year later he was gone from the company.

During the past year Butch worked with a business coach, trying to decide what he wanted to do with the next step in his career.  He looked at several business opportunities before coming across Honest-1 and making the decision to open his own business in Marietta, Georgia.

Butch has always liked cars and appreciates the Honest-1 model and its commitment to customers and the environment.  The location of Butch’s Honest-1 was previously a Napa Auto Car Care Center that had been vacant for over a year.  They are currently remodeling the store to bring it up to Honest-1 standards, adding a children’s play area and an internet cafĂ©, and painting the inside and outside.  Since it was built to be an auto shop, it already has 8 bays and is 5,000 square feet.

Dennis Eidson is the Honest-1 area developer and owns a location in nearby Roswell.

How did you learn about the brand?

I had a business coach and was looking for what I wanted to do with my life after leaving Aptalis.  We went through a process where we evaluated my strengths and looked at what I like to do.  We talked about franchise ownership and other types of business ownership.  I looked into several business models and always came back to Honest-1.  They provide good service at good prices, and I thought I could be successful working within their business model that puts the customer first and cares about the environment.

Why did you choose an opportunity with Honest-1 Auto Care?

I like the eco-friendly part of the package, with is very important these days.  This isn’t an industry where you would think of eco-friendly, so we’ve carved a good niche there.  More and more you are seeing aging cars on the street, and I knew that people are keeping their cars longer. On top of that, cars are being built better now, so there’s an opportunity there since people can keep a car longer by keeping it properly maintained.

I think in general, people distrust auto mechanics because they don’t know enough about auto care.  Honest-1 does a great job of making customers feel like they aren’t being lied to and that their best interests are being taken to heart.  If you take care of customers and treat them right, then you can be successful in this business.  I’ve always worked for companies that prided themselves in treating the customer right and having a lot of integrity.  That lines up with my own personal philosophy in business that if you treat your customers’ right, you’re going to be successful.

Tell me about your love of cars.

I’ve always been a car guy.  Right now I have a Corvette and I have always tried to have a sports car.  I had a family member growing up who owned the gas station at the cross roads by the train tracks in our small town and he was the mechanic that everyone took their car to.  Everybody loved him and I liked just hanging out there and what he did.

While I was in the Air Force they rented bays and had all the tools available so that we could do our own car repair and maintenance.  So I’d go over and do my own oil changes and brake jobs on my own.  I’ve always enjoyed working on cars.

What is the area like that you’ll be located in and serving?  Do you have ties to the area, or family in the area?

We call the area East Cobb.  The address is Marietta but it’s really in East Cobb, and it’s close to Roswell.  Where we’re located is a really great area with a lot of great businesses around.  There’s a Chucky Cheese nearby, a dollar movie theater, a regular movie theater, a big shopping center, and a bunch of other things right there.

My great grandfather lived in Atlanta for a long time and is buried there.  I’ve had family in the area for as long as I can remember so I’d visit a lot growing up.  My son lives in Atlanta too.

Are you involved with any charities or do any community outreach with your business?

We are definitely going to get involved with the community. We just haven’t gotten that far yet.  We’ll start working on a marketing plan as part of the process too.

There is an Air Force Base in Marietta called Dobbins AFB and I’m planning to work on a discount for them and see what might be possible with them.  I’ve done some work with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and have been looking to get more involved.

What challenges have you overcome to get where you are now?

I felt like I’ve overcome challenges my entire life.  I was raised by my grandparents and adopted by them.  They sacrificed a lot to make sure I got a good education and got into school.

What are your expansion or development plans? What is your end goal with Honest-1 Auto Care?

I want to do the first one right and ensure that we’re successful in East Cobb.  Ultimately I’d like to open 2 or 3 more in the Atlanta area.  I’d like to open 3 within 5 years, but that will depend on how things play out.

Do you have any other interesting hobbies or passions?

I’m a member of a local country club in the area and love to play golf.  I have to split that time with my girlfriend of course.  I still stay in touch with a ton of friends from the North Carolina area where I grew up, so we get together fairly often.  I’ve also done work with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and am looking to do more with them.

Honest-1 Auto Care Appoints Braden Poole Operations Director

Promotion Part of Auto Care Company’s Increased Growth Plans

SCOTTSDALE, AZ – Honest-1 Auto Care, the nation’s only full-service auto care company that is 100 percent ESA® Certified Eco-Friendly, is proud to announce the promotion of Braden Poole to Operations Director. The promotion is part of a departmental expansion that will include the hiring of more field managers and support staff to provide training and operational support to existing franchisees, as well as support the growth the brand is undergoing now and plans to continue in the immediate future.

“We are happy about Braden’s new position and excited about the opportunities this promotion creates for both Braden and the entire Honest-1 family,” Rissy Sutherland, COO of Honest-1 Auto Care said. “Braden has been an incredible asset to the company since he joined us one year ago and as we continue to grow and expand our franchise base he will play an important role in our continued success.”

Poole joined the Honest-1 team with over 25 years in the automotive industry, beginning his career at the age of 16 working for Yamaha as an installer. His past professional experiences include AC Delco, CSK Automotive and Pep Boys. Poole brings his incredible knowledge of the automotive industry to his new position and will utilize it to elevate and support the Honest-1 brand.

“I immediately got excited about the opportunity to work for a company like Honest-1,” says Poole. “I can’t say enough about the positive experience I’ve had so far from the owners that I’ve met and the programs we have in place, including the commitment to honesty with our certified technicians, professional and informative service mangers,  the eco-friendly approach and the welcoming environment we create with our centers. I’m excited to aid in Honest-1’s progress and watch the company continue to grow.”

Poole’s duties as Honest-1 Operations Director will be to take new franchisees, current franchisees and their staff through training, work with franchisees during their openings, and serve in a supportive role to staff in both new and current locations. Poole will also work with the corporate team and area developers on numerous future projects.

“There are so many opportunities to create relationships with our customers and to provide honest feedback regarding their vehicle’s service needs all in a straightforward, non-pressure, family-friendly and ecofriendly environment,” Poole said. “We’re really doing a lot to change the old perception of automotive repair centers and really build lasting relationships with our customers and in our communities.”

Aiming to fix the auto care customer experience, H-1 also took the time to re-define how the entire experience should look and feel, from the customer service members at the front desk to the waiting areas and top-quality amenities available while customers wait. Plus, Honest-1 utilizes top of the line technology to review repairs with their customers by showing the customer their vehicle and service issues in a 3D interface to visually see their vehicle needs, and not just hear it from their customer service manager. The brand initiates proactive steps for protecting the environment by employing responsible care standards in pollution prevention, recycling, resource conservation and offering and promotion of Eco-Friday Auto Care® services. These, in addition to their consistent and trusting social media voice, demonstrate why Honest-1 “gets” their customer more than any other auto care company.

Honest-1 Auto Care plans to expand into additional markets around the country including Phoenix, Atlanta, Nashville, Indianapolis, Miami, Orlando, Raleigh, Charlotte, Michigan, Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Denver, and many others. Franchisee Spotlight: Jim Lehman, Malvern, PA

Jim Lehman, 50, a longtime classic car enthusiast, is opening his first Honest-1 Auto Care location with hopes that his sons will want to follow in his footsteps.

During the summer of 1980, right around his 18th birthday, Lehman took some money he was saving and invested it in the stock market. He left it there while he attended Ursinus College as an Applied Mathematics and Economics major with a minor in Computer Science. When Lehman graduated in 1985, he realized the money he had put into the stock market grew a lot faster than he expected. At that moment, he was inspired to go into finances and investing.

Lucky for Lehman, he found the Vanguard Group, a local investing firm of about 500 people, where he started as a phone representative. Lehman stayed with the company for 27 years, working his way up to principal, and doing his part to help Vanguard become a world-class financial service company with $2.5 trillion in assets and over 10,000 employees in the Philadelphia area.

As his 50th birthday approached, Lehman decided it was time for a career change. “I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit,” he said. “I am a risk taker and I wanted to do something on my own. I thought that leveraging my business experience, my passion for cars, and desire to start my own company was a perfect fit for Honest-1.”

How did you learn about the Honest-1?
I have always been an avid classic car lover. My parents helped me buy a 1972 Firebird to fix up after high school to keep me out of trouble until I left for college. They thought it would take me months to get it up and running because the engine was bad, but within two weeks, I had it all fixed-up and ready to go. That’s when I developed a love for cars. But, I always made college and a career a priority.

As I approached 50, I had to decide what to do with the next 10-15 years of my life. I looked around for automotive companies and found Honest-1. They shared my morals and ethics, including being eco-friendly, starting long-term relationships with clients and providing good value and an upscale feel. I thought the auto industry could really benefit from those values.

Why did you choose an opportunity with Honest-1?
Honest-1 has a lot of the same characteristics as the Vanguard Group, the company where I started in 1985. I was attracted to Vanguard early on because of their strong ethics, reasonable costs, and positive treatment of employees and customers. I think that those three qualities (ethics, honesty, and integrity) apply to Honest-1 as well. After working for Vanguard as a phone representative, I also realized that I loved people and working with customers.
I chose to pursue Honest-1 because of the great people there and the opportunity to get in on the ground floor being the first shop in Pennsylvania. I liked the branding and the flexibility that the company provided, especially knowing that I could tailor it to the region and the market. I heard a lot of people complaining about their mechanics and not knowing who to trust or where to go. I want to open this Honest-1, knowing that I could give people a great value and amazing customer service.

What challenges have you overcome to get where you are now?
Opening a franchise requires a bit of a risk-taking attitude. For example, I had worked for the same company for a long time and had stability there, but knew I wanted to do something else. From a financial standpoint, I tried to invest well, plan ahead for the unknown, and mitigate risk along the way. The other big challenge was finding the right people to work with me to get the business up and running. Luckily, I have a lot of good friends who have helped at all the critical junctures.

What are your expansion or development plans? What is your end goal with Honest-1
Generally speaking, I would love to see more Honest-1 locations across Pennsylvania, particularly in Chester County. Customers would be well served with an expansion of our service area, but, I want my current location to be at its best before I expand. I already have a lot of people knocking at my door asking me if they can get in on the business, and I have investors that have already expressed interest in me opening another location. In the future, I would love for my two sons to get involved with the business. I want to be able to pass it along.

What are some of the publications you read? Local? National? What is your goal publication with your business?
I am an avid reader and have always enjoyed reading financial and business publications like the Wall Street Journal, the Economist, Fortune, Kiplinger’s and Money Magazine, as well as my plethora of car magazines. One of my favorites is Muscle Machines by Hemmings Motor News – it’s usually a race between my son Mike and I as to who’ll get to it first. Car and Driver is another that’s well read by the family.
Do you have any interesting hobbies or passions?

I spend a lot of time with my family—my wife, Beth, and my two sons, Michael and Christopher. We like adventures and spending time in the finger lakes of New York. I like anything outdoors such as road biking, kayaking, skiing and boating. Of course, I still love fixing up classic cars—right now, I’m working on a couple of Pontiacs and my wife’s Porsche though the business seems to be my biggest hobby right now. I am also a bit of a history buff and love reading about the revolutionary war, and the early history of the United States. There’s so much rich history right here in Chester County it’s hard not to be!

Area Developer Spotlight: Greg Gonville, Philadelphia

Greg Gonville, 45, is the regional developer for Honest-1 Auto Care in Philadelphia. Greg received his B.A. in business management and entrepreneurship from Northeastern University.  He also has his MBA in technology and e-commerce from West Chester University. As an undergraduate, Greg put his entrepreneurial curriculum into practice and successfully started two businesses: a t-shirt production and design company and a seal coating company for homes and commercial buildings.

In 2000, Gonville went to work for Sara Lee Household and Body care where he was in charge of $135 million division of the corporation which included brands such as Kiwi, Kiwi Select, Ty-D-Bol, and Liquifresh. After five years at Sara Lea, Govnille went to work for SCA Personal Care in Philadelphia, P.A.

But, after years of corporate management, Greg was ready for a change. After doing his research on various franchises, Greg discovered that Honest-1 Auto Care would be his next step.

How did you learn about the brand?
When I left the corporate world, the personal care company I was working for was being restructured. I got a severance package and during that time I was thinking through my career and what I’ve done and what I wanted to do. I wanted to run my own business and I had always had a knack for automotive repair. I got together with a broker and they showed me a bunch of different companies, but I didn’t see anything that interested me. When a local auto shop came up for sale, I went to visit it. While visiting, I just thought about all the things I would change. It was dingy and old and dirty and I wanted to change that. I went to a discovery day for another franchise. While I was there, I was talking to other prospective franchisees and they told me about Honest-1, and it was exactly what I was looking for. I saw that they were looking for a regional developer and that fit my personality, so I shifted from being an owner to being a regional developer.

What challenges have you overcome to get where you are now?
One challenge I’ve faced is discipline. When you are an employee, you get up and go to work. But when you own a business, you have to have both drive and discipline. Learning to be flexible was also a challenge; when things change, you have to be able roll with that. Patience is also key in any business ownership. You have to be patient.

What is your end goal with Honest-1?
My end goal is to have 15–20 shops in my territory. I have some great employees helping me and the owners realize their goals. Currently, I have no shops open, but we will have one open in the second week of September in Malvern.

What are some of the publications you read? Local? National? What is your goal publication with your business?
The Inquirer

Do you have any interesting hobbies or passions?
I stay active by playing ice hockey and baseball. I am also married with two children—my son is 12 and my daughter is 15.

PUBLISHED ON AUGUST 5, 2013
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.—Honest-1 Auto Care L.L.C. will grow its franchisee base by 50 percent in 2013.

That tally takes into account locations that the franchisor opened earlier this year in Tacoma, Wash., and Portland, Ore., along with another 13 expected to open before year-end.

It's been four years since Honest-1 completed the rebranding of its now eco-friendly-focused business model, and Chip Baranowski, Honest-1's vice president of franchise development, said he couldn't be more pleased with the program's rate of expansion.

“We opened eight stores last year, and we've had two open this year and now we have a whole tsunami hitting here soon,” said Mr. Baranowski, who co-owns the program along with Jack Keilt and Rissy Sutherland. “We're finishing up financing and construction, and we're going to see a deluge in openings the rest of this year. It's pretty exciting.”

Scheduled to open this year are outlets in Atlanta; Columbus, Ohio; Dallas; Houston; Philadelphia; Portland, Ore.; Minneapolis (three stores); San Antonio; San Diego; and northern Virginia (two stores). The new openings would boost the Scottsdale-based franchisor's store count to 45.

“The automotive world is inherently a dirty world,” Rhyne admits. “In a lot of ways, that has just become a part of people’s mind frame — cars are dirty and that’s just how it is. That doesn’t mean we can’t be conscious of what we’re doing.”

Franchisee Spotlight: Erik Rhyne

Erik Rhyne, age 30, was born and raised in Greensboro and had high hopes of becoming a NASCAR Race official. After graduating high school, Rhyne went to NASCAR Technical Institute and graduated in 2006 at the top of his class. BMW corporate saw Rhyne’s potential and recruited him to train as a master technician on scholarship in Roanoke, VA.  After graduating, Rhyne worked at various auto bodies as a master technician, and then received a call from his mother who sat next to Rissy Sutherland, president of Honest-1, on a flight. Rhyne moved back to his hometown of Greensboro and opened his own Honest-1 AutoCare at the age of 29.

How did you learn about the brand?
My mom was on a flight and happened to have a seat next to Rissy Sutherland, the president of Honest-1. They began talking and my mom told her I was a mechanic and Rissy provided more information about the franchise. She said the Greensboro location was open and it’s the first and only Honest-1 in the state of North Carolina.

Why did you choose an opportunity with Honest-1 Auto Care?
I love auto repair and my wife and I are very eco-friendly, which Honest-1 spotlights. I don’t want to do anything just to generate profit; I want to be proud of my work on a daily basis. Their environment was comforting to me. They have everything I require.

What makes your business unique in the community?
There are plenty of automotive repair shops in the area but we are clean, attractive, and nice. The eco-friendly services we offer are very unique and the fact that we can give people a pleasant experience in a stereotypically unpleasant business speaks volumes about the brand.

Are you involved with any charities or do any community outreach with your business?
We partner with Wheels for Hope where we repair donated cars and sell them to needy families at an extremely low cost. We donate our labor and parts at no cost. We are also well connected with the University of North Carolina – Greensboro. We work closely with students with autism or Asperger’s who work in the auto shop and learn how automotive repair works. I give my employees PTO to volunteer in the community, which isn't a norm for most businesses.

What challenges have you overcome to get where you are now?
Being in management as a young person is something I've had to learn how to do. During the recession, it was also difficult to get a bank on board, and in addition to having two young kids and working full- time, my experiences have definitely been challenging.

What are your expansion or development plans? What is your end goal with Honest-1 Auto Care?
We would like to open more locations in Greensboro and the surrounding area within the next 2-3 years.

Honest-1 Auto Care Continues to Receive Accolades and is Listed on Franchise Business Review’s Top 50 Brand of 2013

Growing Auto Care Company Garners Second Award of the Year from Well-Known Industry Publication

Honest-1 Auto Care, the nation’s only full-service auto care company that is 100 percent ESA® Certified Eco-Friendly, announced a major recognition as an auto care company but also as a top franchisor. Clocking in as one of eight automotive brands, Honest-1 was acknowledged in the “Best of 2013: Guide to Today's Top Franchises,” by FranchiseBusinessReview.com.

The ranking marks the publication’s second award honored to Honest-1 in 2013. Earlier this year, the auto-care company was also featured in their Franchise Satisfaction Awards (FBR50), an awards program that ranks companies based solely on actual franchise satisfaction.

“We are thrilled and honored to be chosen as one of Franchise Business Review’s top automotive brands,” said Rissy Sutherland, COO of Honest-1 Auto Care. “Since we put all of our effort into ensuring our customers and franchisees are happy and successful by providing not only top of the line experiences and service to our retail customers but also to our franchisees as well. We are eager to continue growing and providing top quality service to our customers and growing as a system.”

Looking at industries across several categories, the guide aims to explore emerging trends to determine which franchise concepts are the most popular and those that are working the best in their respective categories, as well as to explore from an investment and financing standpoint.

Based on a survey of more than 26,000 franchisees representing over 350 franchise brands and 125,000 franchise units/locations, Franchise Business Review acknowledged many of Honest-1’s strengths superior training, support and a vast array of franchise offerings to fit most investment levels and situations.

“Coming off a successful Q1 where our actions directly led to these honors from Franchise Business Review, we look forward to continuing the momentum,” said Chip Baranowski, Vice President of Franchise Development for Honest-1 Auto Care.  “There are many exciting things on the horizon for the brand including new territory areas we have never been in before. Our goal remains the same – to expand and prove we are a difference-maker in the industry.”

The brand recently announced a 31 percent revenue increase from quarter one of 2012 to quarter one of 2013. This continued growth comes on the heels of the 33.4 percent system-wide sales increase Honest-1 experienced in 2012 over 2011, the best increase in the company’s history. Marked by two new region developer deals signed in quarter one to further anchor the growing company in the Midwest and East Coast, Honest-1 is slated for significant location expansion this year.

These, in addition to their consistent and trusting social media voice, demonstrate why Honest-1 “gets” their customer more than any other auto care company.

Honest-1 Auto Care plans to expand into additional markets around the country including, Phoenix, Atlanta, Nashville, Indianapolis, Miami, Orlando, Raleigh, Charlotte, Michigan, Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Denver, and many others. We have made some strong expansion strides in the past year and are focused on the next phase of our company’s progress.”

Marked by two new region developer deals signed in quarter one to further anchor the growing company in the Midwest and East Coast, Honest-1 is slated for significant location expansion this year.

Chip Baranowski, Vice President of Franchise Development for Honest-1 Auto Care, cites the importance of market diversification to the company’s future sales health.

“We have cornerstone regions where we are very strong such as Arizona, Minnesota and the Pacific Northwest,” Baranowski said. “But growing into Ohio, for example, we hope demonstrates to customers our approach to auto service works  because of the customer-centric values we have in place – honesty, a comfortable experience, and a meaningful car care education for customers. We can’t wait to roll up our sleeves and keep things going.”

Honest-1 prides itself on servicing the customer from all capacities. From an informational standpoint, their technicians have a wide scope of knowledge to impart for general and more advanced transmission-based service work on their website, tips that help preserve the long-term efficiency of one’s vehicle. They provide all scopes of service work, from basic oil changes to full transmission diagnostics and complete auto repair services, to ensure the customer feels comfortable that every single repair job or recommendation will help improve the vehicle and is actually necessary.

Aiming to fix the auto care customer experience, H-1 also took the time to re-define how the entire experience should look and feel, from the customer service members at the front desk to the waiting areas and top-quality amenities available while customers wait. Plus, Honest-1 utilizes technology to review repairs with their customers by showing the customer their vehicle and service issues in a 3D interface to visually see their vehicle needs, and not just hear it from their customer service manager. These, in addition to their consistent and trusting social media voice, demonstrate why Honest-1 “gets” their customer more than any other auto care company.

“We work hard to be not only a company servicing vehicles, but one that is a partner to each customer,” said Sutherland. “That’s why we encourage everyone to come into the shop to receive a FREE safety inspection. We also encourage our customers to ‘like’ us on Facebook to learn additional details about how we plan to work together to grow Honest-1 and our communities to the next level.”

Honest-1 Auto Care plans to expand into additional markets around the country including, Phoenix, Atlanta, Nashville, Indianapolis, Miami, Orlando, Raleigh, Charlotte, Michigan, Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Denver, and many others.
